Two weeks ago, in a rundown neighborhood in central Philadelphia, Miriam Medical Clinics held a grand opening celebration, following four long years of preparation. Missionaries Michael and Kay Johnson are helping to bring this holistic ministry to the community through WGM’s Out of Nazareth.
“Miriam Medical Clinics impacts Philadelphia as the only Christian medical ministry run by African American healthcare professionals within a predominantly African American community,” Michael explained. “This has not been done before. It will minister to the community in a manner distinctly, but not exclusively, to that culture. That is because the demographics are, presently, and will continue to change. Hence the staff will be multicultural at onset.”
A community center, run by a local church, was converted into Miriam Medical Clinic. This clinic will physical and spiritual care on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Although it currently offers limited services, it will be a full-service clinic featuring holistic primary care. Services will include internal medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, and gynecologic and obstetric services. MMC will also offer nutritional teaching and support in conjunction with local retail grocers, health seminars, and social services support.
“The ultimate goal is to provide patients with a medical home,” Michael said. “We offer healthcare to the underserved and many who may feel undeserving. Please pray with us as we reach within our city to make Christ known through the ministry of healthcare.”
On the day the clinic opened, five physicians, three RNs, an EMT, a social worker, a psychologist, and around 15 other volunteers, including several pharmacology majors all joined together in a block party to get the word out in the community of this new outreach. The team was especially struck by the number of children in the neighborhood who live without electricity or running water in their homes, due to the extreme poverty of their situation.
